Returnable Packaging has Proven its Value for Internal Logistics within the Automotive Sector

DS Smith Plastics in Spain develops foldable container in collaboration with global automotive manufacturer Faurecia.

Returnable and reusable containers have proven to be a good option for the environment and economically viable for certain applications. One of these applications is the safe and economical transportation of car components from sub-assembly plants to final-assembly plants. Faurecia, a leading manufacturer of car components, is a customer of DS Smith Plastics for the AkyPak custom-designed containers solution to transport car components from sub-assembly operations to final assembly operations.

For its latest project, DS Smith Plastics’ team of designers in Spain developed an AkyPak foldable, returnable container in full collaboration with Faurecia. The container provides up to two-thirds extra space when folded down for return transit. The reusable solution was custom-designed to transport an important automobile producer´s auto parts between operations in the Czech Republic.

Each returnable container features a two-level textile divider that protects and adapts to the specific size of the “Defrost Grille RHD/LHD” internal component for a vehicle. The slides are joined to the container walls to procure maximum internal space optimization.

The height of the container was specialized to maximize the space or cargo load that will result in the reduction of logistics and transportation costs.  DS Smith Plastics’ AkyPak foldable containers consist of a durable and lightweight thermoformed lid and pallet and a polypropylene sleeve in between the lid and pallet. The sleeves can be folded and inserted into the container when empty, reducing the cost associated with return logistics. The design of the lid prevents from water penetration into the container.

DS Smith Plastics offers a variety of optional components that can provide additional ergonomic and material handling benefits. The useful life of these returnable containers is long, and they are fully recyclable. The containers are reused for future new projects.  The height of these containers can be modified with a higher sleeve that adapts to the customers´ needs and spare components are available.
